Geraldo Soares deSouza, Sr.

The Person

On October 19, 1946, Geraldo Soares deSouza arrived in the world in Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil. And so was born a man who would incarnate all the charms, idiosyncrasies, and paradoxes of the human personality. Soccer zealot yet mathematics luminary. Charismatic life of the party yet pugnacious critic. Quiet worker in the background yet perpetual poser of pictures by staring in the distance and hiking one leg.

The Life of the Party

The one-liners. The sayings from 1970s Brazil. The homeade jokes. The hysterically hilarious true (true-ish) stories that feel a bit like the movie Big Fish. The neverending social experiment that is hanging out with Geraldo can only be captured in pictures snapped in real-time.

The Professor

Geraldo attained his Masters in Mathematics at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. He attained his Ph.D. in Harmonic Analysis at SUNY at Albany, Albany, New York. In 1982 he began his professorial career in earnest at Auburn University, where he retired as Professor Emeritus in 2016. Dr. deSouza travels the globe lecturing at universities and conferences on his areas of specialty in the field of mathematics.

The Soccer Lover, Coach

233 Wins, 39 Losses, 9 Ties. That is the lifetime coaching record of one of the best youth soccer coaches in the history of Alabama youth soccer: Coach deSouza. Add to that a youth state championship in 1990, a historic first for a youth soccer team in Auburn, Alabama, and add to that two final four appearances as coach of Auburn High School, also a historic first for AHS soccer. To this day Coach deSouza still plays soccer for fun and health and the visceral love he has for the game.

The wise Old Testament king once wrote:

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NIV)

On April 30, 1973, a gorgeous young Brazilian woman officially entered Geraldo's life. Her name was Ismenia.
